Dr. John Henry Fraser

April 11, 1866 - July 30, 1962


"Well done good and faithful servant". is indeed a fitting tribute to Dr. John Henry Fraser. physician, counselor, friend, who passed away in Princess Elizabeth Hospital, Winnipeg on Monday. July 30.

Dr. Fraser was born in Georgetown, Ontario April 11, 1866. He quit school at an early age but after a few years of driving oxen decided to go back again. In 1894 he received his B.A. from the University of Toronto. He then came West and taught in Hamiota in 1895-6, when there was only a one-room school. He farmed again for a couple of years and then went to Medical Coilege in Winnipeg, returning to Crandall in 1903 as a M.D. The following year be married Miss Mary Telfer of Portage la Prairie, who was his partner until called away in 1950.

For 47 years neither the elements nor time of day kept him away from any call of illness. Even after going to live with his daughter in Winnipeg in 1950, he still called Crandall, "Home" and all whom he had served "His Family". Many were the letters he wrote to those in trouble.

The Doctor was always interested in the well being of the community, the church, school, rink and Forester's Lodge. He also loved plants. His home and grounds was one of the beauty spots of the area.

He is survived by his daughter, Margaret of Winnipeg. His son, John K. of Portage la Prairie and one grandson.

The funeral service was held in Crandall United Church on Thursday, August 2 at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Bowman of Portage la Prairie and Rev. M. Watts of 1 Rivers Camp in charge.

Interment was made in the family plot in Crandall Cemetery. The pall bearers were all nephews, Ross, Wallace, Murray, William, John and Charles Fraser.

The honourary bearers were. T. Gray, D. Cowling. E. Douglas. Ed. Morrison, H. Doupe. D. Douglas, J. Angus, R.L. Dickey, V. Little and Win. Hyndman.

Flower bearers were, J.T. Walker and J. Morrison (Pope).
